Ok so I posted an intro thread a couple of weeks ago about how I was joining the forum to learn more about the breed and determine of they are the breed for my family( although we won't be ready to add a dog to our household for approx 3 years due to needing to save a deposit/sell our apartment/ buy a house).
When looking through old threads there were a couple of points that I couldn't seem to find an answer for or left me a little confused so I've started this one. Sorry if it's in the wrong place or I have missed a thread on any of these areas.
1) other pets: I currently have a ferrets who live in the house. They currently have their own room to play in plus their cages this will be the set up in any future homes. Would this be a problem for a shiba? The two would never have to be in contact with each other and there will always be closed doors between them but I don't really want the dog to be trying to break down the door all the time to get at them if you know what I mean.
2) affection: I don't want a lap dog which is what drew me to the independent nature of the shiba. However from reading peoples responses I can't seem to gage just how independent they are. As I still want to have a bond with the dog and be affectionate just without the constant under my feet, omg I must be touching you nature of other breeds.
3) children: while I don't have children, we would like to have one when the dog is 3/4 years old. We also have a nephew on the way, so it would be lovely if the two could interact under supervision without it being a huge trauma for the dog( the dog would always have somewhere to go to get away from any child, and the child would be taught how to interact with the dog). So how are shibas with children in their family circle and visiting children?
Any input on these areas and day to day living with a shiba would be very helpful. I haven't been researching shibas long and it is a decision I would not take likely hence the early start (2 1/2 years for me to research and commit to adopting a ferret).
Many thanks if you made it through my waffle,
I look forward to hearing your responses
