As you probably are aware of, I adopted a 7 year old male Shiba. I've been attempting to learn his characteristics, so yesterday I decided to take him to a dog park which has 3 divisions. (Puppy under 25 lb area, General Area, Aggressive dog area.) I placed him in all 3. First: There were no dogs in the aggressive dog fenced area, so I let him run in there, but soon enough he found or dug a hole to get over to the General Area which had 50 or so dogs. He ignored almost all dogs, but didn't mind other dogs smelling him. But when he could he continued circling the fenced area to find another hole.
OK, soon enough he did find a hole and was back in the aggressive area, and from there found a way out into the world.
We caught him luckily after another Lady distracted him. From there we placed him into the 25 lb area, and he continued ignoring dogs, circulating the area to find his way out, but it was more secure. Then when my wife picked up a Puppy into her lap (oh how cute) Nikki appeared instantly growling at the pup. Once she let the pup go, he was gone too.
He sniffed other dogs at rare occasions but was mostly on his own hunting for holes. He also got through the legs of people entering the dog park, a couple of times, yet it was double gated which made it easy enough to catch him.
I've never had a dog ignoring other dogs - is this normal for Shibas ?
Also if we adopted another Shiba, would he ignore him or her ? I love to find a playmate for him.
